On Saturday 30th June,
there was a 6-a-side football tournament
held at Charlton Meridian Ground in
South East London, to celebrate the
10th anniversary of the Bexley Deaf
Club.
There were 14 men, 6 women and 4
U11 boys teams entering the tournament.
In the men tournament the Brussels,
Brazil and Snelsmore Common were the
new teams this year, made up of pupils
from the Mary Hare School.
St Johns from London were the pre-
tournament favourites, and they proved
themselves by winning through their
group to the semi-finals to be joined
by Bexley All Stars, Luton and Brussels.
After some really exciting matches
Luton beat Bexley All Stars in a penalty
shootout by 2 goals to 1, to take
overall third place.
This left a very tense battle between
St. Johns and Brussels for the trophy.
It was a very tense match, with the
size of the St. Johns players dwarfing
the lads from Brussels in their yellow
strip. The referee had his work cut
out for him, as neither team was prepared
to give in. Every ball was challenged
for, and there was an electric atmosphere
as the minutes ticked by, and it looked
like it was going to be a goalless
draw. The ball eventually found it's
way into the Brussels net, off a St.
Johns player. A few moments later
the referees' final whistle blew and
the tournament winners, Brussels,
hugged each other with delight, whilst
a rather disappointed St. Johns team
seemed to be asking the referee if
there wasn't a few more minutes of
official playing time left. The referee
stood firm, saying that the match
was over. Some of the members of the
winning team had come over from Belgium
just for this tournament, and they
must have been pleased with the result.
Hopefully they will return to defend
their title in February when Bexley
Deaf Club host their indoor 5-a-side
tournament in 2002. They can be certain
of one thing though - St. Johns will
be back to try again!
The Player of the tournament who
gains the most man of the match goes
to a Brussels player - Gauthier de
Jamblinne.

In the ladies tournament the Bad
Girls team, from Mary Hare School,
beat the ladies from St. Johns into
second place after the results from
their league was calculated. The ladies
from St. Johns, like the men's team,
look forward to 'taking their revenge'
when they meet again. Brighton were
unlucky for settled third position
because St Johns has more goals. The
quality of play was of a very high
standard, and all matches were exciting
to watch.
The Player of the tournament who
gains the most woman of the match
goes to an St Johns player - D. Cooke.

The presentation took place soon
after, with David Foot saying a few
words.
The thanks of all the players go
to the various professional referees
who all worked hard to keep this well
run and successful event.
To continue the celebrations, most
of the players and their supporters
joined members of the Bexley Deaf
Club for a special
barbeque. The evening was a great
success, with a spread or freshly
cooked food, disco, raffles and good
company.
